DAZ Studio & Reality/Luxrender

“A paleo huntress downs a Catoblepas.”

I used this scene, which I posted on this blog on March 25, 2010, to test out the new Reality for DAZ Studio plug-in. This plug-in is a bridge between the ease of scene creation with DAZ Studio and the open source Luxrender engine. Luxrender is an unbiased renderer.

Simply calling Reality a bridge doesn't do the plug-in justice. Reality does much more than act as a bridge, Reality will take your DAZ Studio scene and convert it to a Luxrender scene, converting all the objects in the scene. Of course, you will have to work on some of those conversions. Sometimes, for example, the materials will be translated as glossy when they should be matte.

Paolo, the creator of the Reality plug-in, named it Reality for a reason; because that is what unbiased rendering engines try to approximate. If you look at the previous render of this scene, which I rendered with Poser 8, you will noticed that this scene is closer to reality. The lighting for this Luxrender scene is just one light source called a Sun. That's it. A Sun. The great thing about Luxrender is that it includes real lighting behavior without you having to use multiple lights to mimic the bouncing of light in real life. That's one of the powers of the Luxrender engine.
